RIPPLE (Ripple) - blockchain platform for the banking system. It is intended for use by payment systems for currency exchange operations, transfers and settlements between network members. It does not imply chargebacks, that is, a completed transaction cannot be challenged and canceled, as, for example, Visa or Master Card allows. Thus, Ripple is not just a cryptocurrency, but a whole company with a large infrastructure and staff.

FEATURES OF THE RIPPLE SYSTEM

Ripple is a global settlement system. It has its own unique features that distinguish Ripple from other cryptocurrencies. This is not Bitcoin's altcoin - the system has little in common with BTC. It does not use the traditional blockchain that we are used to seeing in most cryptocurrencies.

The principle of the system is based on agreements, the so-called consensus. For clarity, let's take such a scheme as an example. You need to give your partner in another country $ 100. It is impossible to meet in person, sending by transfer is overhead, and therefore you negotiate with your acquaintance supplier, who is located in that area, and he gives his money to your partner.

To this acquaintance, then third parties transfer values equivalent to one hundred dollars, and this can occur both in any currency convenient to him, or even be returned by material things. As a result, everyone gets what they want, although few of the entire chain know each other - all interaction is based on trust. In Ripple, the role of such people is played by the server nodes.

The basis of the XRP system is a register in the form of a distributed database, where all data about user accounts and transactions are stored. It uses the RPCA protocol - Ripple Protocol consensus algorithm. The registry is updated every few seconds and the most current one at a given time is called LCL - Last Close Ledger. Copies of the registry are stored on network servers, also called nodes.

With the outside world, or rather with shops, exchange offices, the system interacts through the so-called "gateways". Anyone who wants to conduct a transaction must send money to the gateway using a bank card, electronic payment system. Further, money can be exchanged for any currency in the world. At the same time, the system will do it at the most favorable rate.

When the system receives a request for a new transaction, it spreads through the network like ripples on water. Any node can be the initiator of such a request. The rest of the servers decide whether to add it to the registry or reject it. This is how sets of candidates are formed to be added. The servers are given a certain amount of time to consider them.

With each iteration of the test, the sets become more and more similar to each other. As soon as the difference between the two is minimized, the system is considered to have reached a consensus. Unaccepted applications remain in the sets and are sent to a new stage of consideration together with the just received transactions. Therefore, the network registry is updated every few seconds.

Ripple allows users to transfer funds to each other in any currency - dollars, euros, crowns, Mexican pesos, yen, rupees, and even precious metals such as platinum, gold, silver. Moreover, the translation takes a few seconds.

The platform also has its own internal currency, XRP. All coins were issued on the project stratum. Their number is 100 billion tokens. Moreover, only about 7 billion XRP were distributed among users during the existence of the system, more than half remained in the possession of Ripple Labs. This situation naturally raises concerns among the community, since the company has every opportunity to manipulate the course. And they are not groundless.

A good example occurred on the Bitstamp exchange, when Jed McCaleb tried to sell about 100 million coins of the system, which was equal to about 1 million dollars. The exchange had to freeze McCaleb's funds, otherwise the collapse of the exchange rate would have been inevitable.

To reduce tension among the community, Ripple Labs has blocked the remaining coins at its disposal using smart contracts. There are 55 of them in total, and each corresponds to a billion tokens. Once a month, one contract expires, and the company has the right to dispose of the released funds. Mostly she directs them to maintain the current activities of Ripple Labs and the further development of the system.

Since all coins were originally mined, Ripple is not mined. Therefore, you will not be able to make money using the computing power of your computer XRP. At first, the company distributed tokens for participation in various projects, but later this opportunity to receive coins was suspended.

The Ripple coin is subdivided into a million parts called a drop. When conducting transactions, about 0.00001 XRP is withdrawn from each participant. These are such scanty funds that it is difficult to even call them a commission. The main purpose of such a write-off is to protect against spam. If the network begins to be attacked with a large number of transactions, the size of the commission will automatically rise for those accounts that do this, and in the end the attack will drown, since it will be unprofitable.

The most interesting nuance with XRP is that the withdrawn commission funds are destroyed, thus the number of coins in the system is constantly decreasing.

Although Ripple's cryptocurrency is considered decentralized, since there are a large number of servers (nodes) on the network, it is not, however, in the full sense of the word. Anyone can create and add a server to the system. However, before being allowed to process transactions, it is necessary to pass Ripple Labs certification and receive the title of a trusted node. This requires:

  • have an excellent reputation;

  • always be available online;

  • have a good internet connection.

At the same time, there are relatively few third-party servers in the system. Most of the nodes are owned by the company itself.

While traditional cryptocurrencies are aimed at ordinary users and aim to become an alternative payment system, Ripple, on the contrary, is actively integrating into the banking industry. The main clients of the system are large banks and financial organizations, to which the system offers profitable ways to instantly transfer money around the world.

WHY BANKS USE RIPPLE

Several banks are already enjoying the benefits of Ripple, including Santander, Axis Bank, Yes Bank, Westpac, Union Credit, NBAD, and UBS. According to Ripple, thanks to the platform, banks can save an average of $ 3.76 per transaction. Considering that banks carry out thousands or even millions of transactions per year, this is a very significant savings. If there is anything that can attract the attention of banks, it is technology that simultaneously allows you to earn more and save more.

This is why Ripple - a low-cost global real-time settlement network - has a bright future. The company offers financial institutions a new way of doing business that will allow them to keep up with the demands of the times. Ripple is headed by Brad Garlinghouse, but the technology side of the business is handled by David Schwartz, the chief cryptographer. The Ripple team is constantly improving their algorithms and looking to approach banks internationally. Based in San Francisco, the company employs the best professionals from around the world and strives to make money transfers between any country and organization easier. Ripple can rightfully be called one of the most interesting fintech companies.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF RIPPLE

Ripple benefits

The main advantage of XRP over other cryptocurrencies is, of course, that Ripple works directly with banks. Some principled investors will not want to invest in Ripple out of their reluctance to maintain a banking monopoly, but they are clearly in the minority. From a business standpoint, Ripple has definitely made a smart decision, establishing ties with the very corporations that control global finance.

Most likely, investors will be able to capitalize on the constant increase in value simply by making a long-term investment in XRP. Simply put, a good decision would be to buy XRP and forget about it: in the long term, the value of your assets can grow tens or even hundreds of times.

Ripple is astonishingly fast - it takes less than four seconds to confirm a transaction. In other words, the platform can be used for daily purchases - of course, if it gets enough distribution.

In addition, Ripple boasts good scalability: the system regularly processes up to 1000 transactions per second. It has been shown to be equally capable of processing over 50,000 transactions per second - the same as Visa.

Disadvantages of Ripple

Since Ripple was originally announced as a system that would allow ordinary people to make money transfers around the world, the company's focus solely on banks has received a lot of criticism.

However, if you like the platform itself but don't like the company, you can use Stellar, a fork of Ripple from Jed McCaleb based on more altruistic principles.

As stated earlier, all XRP tokens were issued at once, and Ripple owns most of these tokens. Despite the fact that these funds are now blocked and the likelihood of a sale is low, this problem still worries many. In a sense, Ripple is XRP's central bank.

Researchers from Purdue University have determined that the Ripple platform has some vulnerabilities: due to the open nature of the network, its nodes can be attacked, which will prevent some users from gaining access to their funds.

Many may decide not to invest in XRP for personal reasons - especially if they invest in cryptocurrencies to avoid banking and government control. On the other hand, investors who are looking for profit and see nothing wrong with Ripple's business model have every reason to buy XRP.

The principles behind Ripple's technology and how it improves international payments. In this example, 2 banks use a correspondent bank to process their payments. Ripple technology includes Ripple Connect, which is used to coordinate the exchange of information between two banks. ILP Ledger uses the Interledger protocol to coordinate the movement of funds between institutions in order to transfer a payment. Ripple regulates existing transfer formats such as SWIFT Fin and ISO 20022 through transfer technology such as the CGI smart gateway or Volante's VolPay.

A LITTLE RIPPLE HISTORY

риппл

The prototype of the modern Ripple platform appeared long before the appearance of bitcoin - in 2004. Programmer Ryan Fuger (Canada) created a decentralized platform for payments, but this project did not attract a large number of users, and did not receive the desired success.

The Ripple we know was created in 2012 by OpenCoin based on Ryan Fuger's concept. Early investors in this platform included Google Ventures (now GV). In September 2013, OpenCoin changed its name to Ripple Labs Inc. The main goal of XRP was called the simplification of global financial transactions.

Against the background of total cryptomania and the incredible growth of bitcoin, at the end of 2017 Ripple also "shot". At the beginning of January 2018, it cost about $ 3, but at the end of this month its price dropped to $ 1.2.While we were writing this article, the price of one XRP fell even lower (summer 2018 is not the most pleasant time for Ripple investors) ...

Ripple's "cryptocurrency" in 2018 no longer looks so desirable. All because of huge losses in price and capitalization. But Ripple isn't going anywhere. The banking system liked this pseudo-script very much. Many banks and baknov groups are integrated with ripple. Among them:  Akbank,  ATB Financial, Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), Cambridge Global Payments, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD), Tas Group, UniCredit Group and many others.

PROSPECTS FOR TRON

If you invested in ripple last year, you would have made almost 500x profit in early 2018. Now ripple has dropped in price. In addition, the essence of ripple contradicts the essence of cryptocurrencies. The reason for this is the centralization of XRP.

In any case, I advise you to invest part of the funds here, because I believe that the cryptocurrency investment portfolio should be diversified. I would not recommend investing in only one currency (the situation with a sharp drop in Bitcoin is an example of this). Ripple is quite an innovative product with a good base.

Interestingly, in early August 2018, even former US President Bill Clinton signed up for ripple lovers. Madonna was in the same company. The question arises, is the Ripple team engaged in?

Let's be fair, company representatives are very active. Now, for example, they are implementing a plan to expand into India. This is only about financial crypto aid to the government of India. Obviously, in return, Ripple will penetrate the country's banking system and take root there. This is a huge market that will definitely not let the coin blow out.
